Sinan Saül : The Gamut of Darkness
Ambidexter Gallery is delighted to present a solo show of paintings by Turkish artist Sinan Saül. This is the first solo exhibition of Saül’s work made between 2016 and 2018.
For Saül, the eccentricity of his artworks wants to get the attention of people who don’t settle for mediocrity, offering countless images, titles, materials and techniques that refuse to obey to aesthetics or compositional rules. Showing an extensive knowledge of literature, music and popular culture, Saül creates complex and sensuous works of art that are created as reflections of our current state of mind.
The title of the exhibition, “The Gamut of Darkness” evokes certain dark emotions that everybody feels, but nearly no one has the courage to express.
“We all have bad thoughts in our minds, but we don’t speak about them.” The exhibition, comprising a mix of ink, oil and acrylic paintings, attests to a non-tragic apotheosis where Saül employs paint, content and form seeking to liberate himself from the logic of the frame.
Merging the captivating and the uncanny, the beautiful and the repugnant, “The Gamut of Darkness” immerses the viewer in enigmatic figures and forms representative of Saül’s ambivalent emotions. The distinctions between the conscious and subconscious are disrupted through the presence of certain unusual objects, abstract faces and cityscapes that makes an allusion to the artist’s personal experiences and emotions during the natural cycle of life.
Saül’s works covers the gamut of people’s fears and emotions who lack the freedom of expression chained to mediocrity.
