Sedat Ayhan : Roommate
Sedat Ayhan’s frst solo exhibition, Roommate, presents the phantasmagoria of ordinary reality through surrealist methodology and a grotesque humor. Inspired by history and combining the tradition of multi-fgure painting with the basic components of abstraction, the artist aims to create new perceptual problems about the visible by challenging the possibilities of fgurative form. Compositions shaped by instinctive gestures and unplanned shaping constitute the artist’s production practice.
In this exhibition, Sedat Ayhan constructs a comprehensive personal mythology with reference to Freud’s “primordial clan and father myth”. The fgure of the “dead primordial father” in Freud’s myth appears as a psychotic, incoherent and infantilized Spectre who is trying to maintain his power. In a phantasmatic universe, the possible dysfunctional and destructive effects of the father’s inappropriate presentation of himself on the family -and on society in general- are examined.
The title “roommate” ascribed to the Spectre traces the unconscious delusions and psychotic fashbacks caused by the emergence of the “A-Father”, based on the idea of sharing the same nest with the operator of the law.
