Gizem Akgönül : Mythic Immediacy

10.02 – 03.03.2022

Mythic Immediacy perceives myths as the oldest production layers of inhabited lands. Instead of destroying the other for its own image, it pays tribute to the spiraling existence.

Istanbul’s history and memory is in front of us in a way that it is not possible to reach it in its entirety. Istanbul can be seen as a hybrid of the forms of expression and ways of acting of intertwined civilizations. It is in a constant state of motion under the infuence of its residents, its witnesses and people in power.

Akgönül refects her mythical consciousness, her past and her nowness, which it blends with an original and experimental production approach, as an attempt to draw a line from the oldest layer to the present, through production techniques specifc to tradition and geography.

The artworks which are being produced simultaneously with the ongoing exhibition were designed to be open to inevitable intervention and interaction, just like Istanbul itself. The conceptual map and the visual memory of the works that are being produced are made to be infuenced by the visitor’s thoughts, memories and ideas. Some of the works will overfow from their designated space into the city and some will remain hidden following Istanbul in its creation.

Mythic Immediacy is an attempt to re-interpret, live and sustain, referring to the uninterrupted fow of life, the inevitable intervention of the present into the past and the future.
