Ayda Demirci : Two

‘Two’ brings together Ayda Demirci’s paintings made in 2024. Consisting of oil paintings on canvas and paper, the exhibition takes its name from the artist’s habit of working in pairs. This binary bond between the paintings is sometimes formed by grouping the same dimensions, sometimes by starting at the same time, sometimes by similarity or contrast.

While viewing these abstract compositions, we encounter signs of time and space. When viewed through colors, the exhibition can be considered as a visual equivalent of time. Red, orange and pink tones evoke the hours when the sunlight is more slanted, while bright and cool colors suggest a midday clarity. Just like the contribution of light to what happens during the day, we can feel its omnipresence in these abstract compositions. Likewise, it is also possible to see an allusion to space in these paintings. Ayda Demirci creates compositions that can give clues to the places she has been. She uses color and form as a record of the image in the changing geographies in her studio in Istanbul or on her travels. However, these visual records are far from being descriptive, perhaps only a starting point to reach the painting.
